States of the Soul

We often describe ourselves by what we can see.

Our body.
Our personality.
Our emotions.
Our achievements.
Our circumstances.

But beneath all of these exists something deeper: the condition of our inner being.

There are moments when we feel clear, peaceful, connected, and alive. There are others when we feel restless, confused, disconnected, or trapped within ourselves.

These changes are not simply changes in mood.

They can reveal different states of the soul.

The soul may remain the same in its deeper nature, while our awareness of it, our relationship with it, and the direction of our inner life can change profoundly.

Understanding these states can help us recognize where we are—and where we are going.

What Is a State of the Soul?

A state of the soul describes the condition of our deeper inner life at a particular point in our journey.

It is reflected in how we perceive ourselves, how we respond to life, what we value, and how connected or disconnected we feel from meaning and the Divine.

A person can have everything externally and still experience an inner state of emptiness.

Another person may have very little and yet possess an extraordinary sense of peace, gratitude, and purpose.

This reminds us that the state of the soul cannot be measured only by external circumstances.

It is shaped by consciousness, intention, character, experience, and spiritual orientation.

The Soul Can Move Through Different States

Our inner condition is not always fixed.

There may be periods of unconscious living, when we simply react to habits, desires, fears, and social expectations.

There may be periods of questioning, when something inside us begins asking deeper questions:

Who am I?
Why am I here?
What am I becoming?
What is truly important?

There may also be states of greater clarity, where we begin to live with more awareness, humility, compassion, and purpose.

And sometimes there are moments of profound stillness—when the noise within becomes quieter and we become more aware of something deeper than our ordinary thoughts.

These states should not necessarily be understood as permanent levels.

The soul's journey is movement.

We can become more conscious, fall back into old patterns, learn from the experience, and begin again.

From Inner Disturbance to Inner Clarity

One of the most important movements of spiritual life is the movement from inner fragmentation toward inner integration.

When our thoughts say one thing, our values another, and our actions something else, we experience conflict within ourselves.

We may know what is right but repeatedly choose what is easy.

We may want peace while constantly feeding resentment.

We may seek truth while protecting the beliefs that make us comfortable.

The soul becomes divided by contradiction.

Spiritual growth begins when we become willing to see these contradictions honestly.

Clarity does not mean becoming perfect.

It means becoming increasingly honest about who we are, what we are doing, and what we are becoming.

States of the Soul and Consciousness

Our state of consciousness strongly influences our inner condition.

When consciousness is narrow, life can become centered around immediate desires, fear, recognition, possession, and self-protection.

As awareness expands, we begin to see beyond immediate impulses.

We become more capable of observing our thoughts instead of automatically obeying them.

We begin to recognize the consequences of our choices.

We become more sensitive to the suffering of others.

We begin asking not only:

“What do I want?”

but also:

“What is right?”

And eventually:

“What serves the deeper purpose of my existence?”

This movement from impulse toward awareness is one of the ways the soul develops.

Difficult States Are Not Always Meaningless

Not every difficult inner state represents failure.

Confusion can lead us to search.

Loss can change our priorities.

Suffering can expose what we previously ignored.

Failure can reveal the limitations of the identity we built around success.

Even spiritual dryness—the feeling that we have lost connection, meaning, or direction—can become part of a deeper journey.

This does not mean suffering should be romanticized or that every painful experience has an obvious purpose.

Rather, it means that our response to experience can transform what that experience becomes within us.

A difficult state can remain a wound.

Or, through awareness and reflection, it can become a teacher.

The Higher Movement of the Soul

If the soul can move through different states, what direction should it move toward?

Not toward perfection in the human sense.

Rather, toward greater awareness, wisdom, love, purity, humility, freedom, and alignment with the Divine.

The more we develop, the less our lives are controlled by unconscious impulses.

We become increasingly capable of choosing rather than merely reacting.

We become more compassionate without becoming weak.

More disciplined without becoming rigid.

More humble without becoming powerless.

More spiritually aware without believing ourselves superior to others.

The development of the soul is therefore not simply about feeling spiritual.

It is about becoming a different kind of person.

The Purism Perspective

From the perspective of Purism, the States of the Soul can be understood as changing conditions within the soul's larger journey of consciousness and spiritual development. The soul is not defined only by its present circumstances or emotional state; it is part of a deeper journey toward greater awareness, refinement, wisdom, love, and connection with the One Divine. The Four Pillars provide a practical foundation for this development: caring for ourselves, serving others with compassion, recognizing the One Divine, and consciously developing our relationship with the Divine. In this view, even periods of confusion, difficulty, or inner darkness can become meaningful when approached with awareness and free will. The question is not simply “What state am I in?” but “What is this state teaching me, and what direction am I choosing for my soul

Becoming Aware of Your State

Perhaps one of the most powerful spiritual practices is simply learning to recognize where you are.

Before reacting, pause.

Ask yourself:

What is happening within me right now?

Is there peace—or resistance?

Clarity—or confusion?

Love—or resentment?

Humility—or the need to prove yourself?

Connection—or separation?

Awareness begins with observation.

And observation creates the possibility of choice.

You cannot transform what you refuse to see.

The Soul Is Still Becoming

Your current state does not have to define your destination.

You may be confused today and become clearer tomorrow.

You may be spiritually distant and later rediscover connection.

You may carry wounds that eventually become sources of wisdom.

The soul's journey is not measured by never falling.

It is measured by the direction in which you continue to move.

Perhaps spiritual growth is not about reaching one final emotional state and remaining there forever.

Perhaps it is about becoming increasingly capable of returning to what is true.

Returning to awareness.

Returning to love.

Returning to humility.

Returning to the Divine.

The state of your soul today is a moment in the journey—not the end of it.
